Singapore-based software applications developer U2opia

Singapore-based software applications developer U2opia Mobile has developed a new application for mobile phones that will allow them to access Facebook on all kind of handsets without paying for a data connection.

"We are using USSD technology, which will enable users to access Facebook without having a GPRS connection on their phones," said Sumesh Menon, the co-founder and CEO of U2Opia Mobile.

Unstructured Supplementary Data (USSD) is the technology used by telecom players to send alerts to their users that inform them about their balance at the end of call or for sending miss call alerts.

Menon mentioned that though the technology will not provide access to graphics, it will help users send and view updates on their friends' Facebook walls.

"It is like SMS and hence, the load on the network is negligible. We have built some commands through which a user can receive alerts on activity happening on his wall as well post an update," said Menon.

U2opia launched this application with Indian telecom major Bharti Airtel. While Airtel customers can update their Facebook status through this USSD service free of cost, Rs 1 per day will be applicable for accessing the full-feature application, which enables viewing news feeds, commenting on or liking news feed stories, posting on friends' walls, confirming friend requests, viewing notifications and finding as well as adding friends.

"In the Indian market scenario, where the penetration of smartphones is relatively low and the use of internet on mobiles is primarily limited to key cities, many users are excluded from accessing their Facebook accounts via mobile phones," said Shireesh Joshi, Bharti Airtel Director -- Marketing, Mobile Services, in a statement.

Airtel users can dial *325# and *fbk# for non-Qwerty mobile handsets to access Facebook without subscribing to data plans, the statement said.

"We look forward to bringing millions of Facebook users in India closer to their love for social networking by allowing them to access it anytime, anywhere on their Airtel-powered mobile phones," Joshi added.

CNC software also uses electronic memory

CNC system software is what any CNC machine uses to create the operations within the machine. Generally it is considered to be the "intelligence" that governs the type of operation performance or the overall capacities of the machine. The software will be how the machine designs, cuts and operates the work that the operator programs into the computer.

CNC software also uses electronic memory modules where information is automatically stored inside the CNC machine. In some case this information cannot be changed and in others, through the use of temporary memory, it can be changed.

Generally speaking the computer is very important to the process of the CNC software because the computer numerical controls are usually outside the machine on a small or large keyboard. The computer is offline when it is performing the programming of parts and the computer controls the other parts that are necessary to create the product, depending on the type of CNC in use.

There are four basic software types that CNC uses:

Manual G Code Programming

Many of the larger commercial machines use and it is used for simple machine processes. The drawbacks of this type is that it takes a long time for someone to learn how to program G Codes and if you want to use more complicated machines, it is time consuming to learn how to use it. Because if these issues, many operators would rather not learn how to do this and

Offline CAM Programming

This type of programming can be done using a local PC and generally is available for larger machines as well as some of the smaller desktop CNC machines. This software can't be used without a PC at the front end aspects of the machine. This software is also difficult to learn and takes a long time to completely understand for many people.

Conversational Programming

This type of programming is a better type of software program for the use of CNC because it is intuitive, which means it is simple to learn by the average computer person and it is similar to the programming in regular PCs. The reason this type was developed was so that it could do both simple and complex parts without having to take so long to learn.

Windows Based Programming

Many CNC software programs are now Windows based which means it works through Windows XP or Windows VISTA. The operator can import CAM and CAD programs and it can import other types of software like dxf files depending on the type of machine being used.

Today all CNC programs go by a variety of names including MSHAK-CNC, ProtoTRAK or TRAK, and OpenCNC all with their unique way of approaching a CNC system.

Also the purpose of each software program is to make life easier for the operator and make the machine do what is required. The easier the software is for the operator to program, the more the machine will be used. The particular software has also been used with CAD and CAM systems which makes this easier for many operators.

CNC Software Trends in Woodworking

Computer-Numerically Controlled (CNC), Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM) software is used in the woodworking industry to control a machine's movement, for instance a panel saw or a router. The instructions for controlling the machine are provided by a CAD module. This module is integrated with control software, or may exist as an independent application. In today's market high-end cabinet design packages are able to communicate with CNC machinery. Computerized manufacturing systems typically cost thousands of dollars. They are generally meant for industrial operations. Some cheaper systems have appeared in the market recently.

Besides mill work companies and high-volume furniture manufacturers, novices and master craftsmen have also embraced CNC technology. The number of possibilities and benefits that CNC provides cannot be ignored. Craftsmen have quickly realized that using CNC is crucial to ensure that a finished woodwork product is of the highest quality.

As a case in point, it is difficult to produce precise-fitting assemblies using conventional tools. However these can be easily created using CNC. Inlays, arches, and 3 Dimensional relief carvings can be cut easily and efficiently with the help of CNC technology. Time consuming designs or designs that are too complex to create with traditional woodworking tools can now be executed with a great degree of precision. Assemblies for knock-down furniture, for instance are very time consuming and require several templates and jigs. CNC replaces physical templates with digital versions which can be created in software. This provides the freedom to try out design and assemblies on a computer before actually cutting into the material.

It is easy to modify a design on the computer and adjust it to fit, or existing designs can be transformed into new products. Using the right software and hardware, existing 2D & 3D furniture parts can be converted to a digital format that is understood by CNC. The digital version of parts can then be transformed to produce a number of shapes and sizes for an original design. In this way a single furniture assembly becomes a complete furniture line!

Advantages of CNC in the Woodworking Market

CNC gives manufacturers the ability to quickly tailor products to suit a particular sector of the market thereby providing value-added services. For instance a manufacturer may produce a generic table as part of a furniture line selling at a given price point. By simply adding a 3D relief applique to the table with minimum effort the table can easily be sold for a premium. With a little bit of creativity, the manufacturer can easily provide customers with offerings that are elegant and unique, thereby adding to the company's bottom line.

The role of CNC in Crafts

Many people in crafts business are also taking advantage of the capabilities that CNC has to offer. They are using CNC to churn out high quality products, are able to produce better products for customers and are able to produce unique designs that their competitors cannot replicate by hand. Even if the craftsman uses CNC for shaping materials as the initial step or for unique decorative add-ons, the value added to the end product is immense. Also saving time during production leaves more time for creativity, so that the next product is even better than the last one.

Productivity gains through software integration

While CNC offers immense benefits on the production side, using automation software customer needs can be met more easily. The resulting cost reduction and increased productivity also reflects in a high return on investment, through increased profitability.

Such software integrates seamlessly with CNC, virtually eliminating manual operations. Further, the software is easy to learn, so manufacturers see rapid increases in productivity soon after implementation.

Besides automation, using software provides a significant advantage in tool pathing. By communicating with CAM the software automatically applies tool pathing. This significantly reduces the propensity for errors, and the inevitable time lags that come with the errors.

Analyzer Software of this kind can help provide information to make bar codes and labels also. On the labels a printed image of what the processed part will look like can be seen. In ad¬dition to the visual, there are dimensions as well. The advantage of this is that the wrong sized board will not be selected to make a part, and the CNC operator can validate what they are about to run through the machine, before any errors are made.

The move from manual to automation in the woodworking industry has helped tremendously in meeting customer expectations and improving profitability. The future looks even better. As more manufacturers embrace technology, the focus will shift from the actual production process to creating designs that are unique and have a distinct personality. A perfect win-win situation for the manufacturer and the customer.

The Home Made CNC Machine

Like I keep telling, it’s Google, “cnc at home” searchwords, and choose from a list of thousands!

Illustration 36A guy named V. Chan, at pathcom.com, created this drill-mill conversion

Software’s not a problem, you can find free software, cheap software, expensive software, you can even learn how to make your own CNC controlling software, what have you!

You can use your present PC to control it, use an old 386, buy the CNC, Computer, and all, but by now you’re just wondering:

“Yeah, right, but WHY DO I NEED A CNC MACHINE?”

Well, in theory, if you have one of those, you will never have to build a Prototype, just “draw” the pieces in some 3D program, have the CNC mill them out of metal blocks, or other material, and assemble the Prototype like as much as some IKEA furniture!

In my Prototype building experience, tough, NOTHING is that simple, something always needs some extra work, but hey, Industrial Precision pieces, just as you imagined them, now that’s something not to snare at!

Illustration 37 This guy, Tom Gootee, at fullnet.com, built a CNC machine from an Epson printer!

So go have some fun, be it building, buying it all ready to mill, converting it from a drill press, Google it, choose what’s right for you, could not be the one that suits your neighbor, the CNC world’s yours!

HEY! IT GETS BETTER!

Now there’s?Fab@home.org, and all your problem’s over!

These guys are into Fabricating, or CNC home manufacturing, or buildin’ your 3D stuff with a home made Robot.

And not only that, they help you MAKE YOUR OWN CNC MACHINE with only a fraction of the money you spend on Pro CNCs, but with a even more flexible machine! And you can even save more money, if you’ve got some old Printer around.

If you’re thinking you cannot do it, think again, ‘cos they teach every darn step, even WIRE CUTTING the right way, so there’s no excuse not to try!

Now that’s good news or what?

RepRap, another fabber

Here’s another Fabber, RepRap, notice the different steel rod approach, comes also with Software support, same as Fab@home…

Max’s, much more than a Little Robot shop

Max’s Little Robot shop, the title says…

But that’s not true: It’s a HUGE help for lots of projects you may have.

I’m just reading the tabs at the left of his page, Robots, Mechanical Fabbing, Injection Molding, the guy’s made a machine for it,

AND a download area!

There you’ll find lots of CAD files, don’t you just love the kewl CAD appearance…

Plus a Digital Electronics section that you have to see.

Be sure to give this Site a Look, you will learn a lot.
